The Sifenlu xingshi chao (a commentary on a code of monastic conduct known as the Four-Part Vinaya) by Daoxuan (596‒667), founder of the Nanshan school of vinaya studies, was studied and had further commentaries written on it by successive generations of vinaya scholars. This paper undertakes a comparison of the terminological interpretations found in Japanese and Chinese Buddhist treatises, taking two of the leading commentaries on Daoxuan’s work as examples: the Zichiji by Yuan Zhao (1048‒1116) and the Shigyosho by Sho-on (1301‒1361). From examining a number of specific examples, it emerges that the commentary of the Japanese monk Sho-on tends to be more precise than that of his Chinese counterpart in clarifying etymologies of the Buddhist terminology employed in the source text. Generally speaking, it was more difficult for Buddhists whose native language was not Chinese to read the Chinese Buddist scriptures than it was for their Chinese counterparts. As they read they needed detailed, word by word guidance, for example in determining whether a particular word or phrase was standard Chinese or a phonetic transliteration from Sanskrit. In order to provide such guidance, Sho-on’s Shigyosho spends many more pages and devotes far more effort to this type of semantic interpretation of Buddhist religious terminology than its Chinese counterpart.
