Abstract

In Soka University, one-day field excursion trips are organized as practical learning,\nfor students who aim to obtain teachers’ certificates in geography and history. According\nto the official school curriculums of geography, major landforms must be taught,\nhowever, most college students do not know basic geomorphology. As the university is\nlocated on the western rim of Kanto Plain, most of alluvial landforms can be observed\nwithin two hour distance. Also historical monuments from the Neolithic Jomon Era.\nSeven trips are organized in a school year, mostly on weekends. Although attendance\nto the trips are voluntary, students can earn some bonus points when they submit\nworksheets. Destinations are Takao-san, Enoshima(marine landforms and active faults),\nKamakura(medieval city and Tsunami disaster), Tamagawa-Josui (water supply canal\nbuilt in Edo Era), Hino Terrace, Kokubunji area, Nogawa River (along terrace scarp),\nJindaiji (oldest buddhist temple in Tama region founded by Korean immigrants), Jomon\nand Yayoi settlement ruins in Tama region, Todoroki-Valley (outcrop of sediments and\nriver piracy), famous Jiyugaoka -Denenchofu residential development area of 1920s.
