The purpose of this essay is to investigate the educational philosophy of Jitsuki Nishiyama through his remaining documents. He taught at Tenri University in the Physical Education Department since its founding to 1981. At the beginning of his career, Mr. Nishiyama taught at junior high schools. While teaching enthusiastically as a young teacher, he improved his skiing skills and sought more effective methods to coach skiing. Afterwards, he worked with the Physical Education Departments of Kagoshima, Kanagawa and Yamagata prefectures. After the end of the war, as the prefectural chief of the Physical Education Department, he not only was in charge of physical education in school, but he also promoted physical education within society. He believed that, more than anything, the training of high-quality instructors was a necessity. He mentioned the following three points: that sports can make one’s life rich and plentiful, that teachers should instruct enthusiastically and that teachers should not only improve technical skills, but also develop their personalities, so that students have a meaningful experience. I believe that his enthusiasm for education was reflected in his research of skiing skills, and in his teaching methods at Tenri University. He achieved a great number of things there, most noticeably the development of a new style of skiing called‘Kyokushin.’In 1971, this style was presented in“National Ski Method of Japan,” a magazine published by the Ski Association of Japan. This was a theory based on motion dynamics, and he believed that empirical teaching methods should be rejected. Mr. Nishiyama strived to help everyone enjoy skiing safely, therefore making their lives richer. This concept was a part of the Tenri University educational philosophy, and it was passed on to those who learned from him.
