Abstract

The objective of this article is to review what have been the major arguments over librarian training from the 1980s to the early 2000s, to elucidate how different topics were discussed and how the plans for library science education programs that specialized in different types of library were evaluated.   For this purpose, we collected, sorted, and analyzed documents on librarian training and plans for library science education programs written by five leading researchers of library science from the 1980s to the early 2000s.   The results were as follows: 1) Many problematic issues related to librarian training were identified. In particular, many researchers were concerned with the issue of who would provide such training. 2) The arguments evinced a lack of continuity in general, and it became clear that very few of those involved in the discussions had evaluated preceding opinions. 3) Toshio Iwasaru and Masami Shibata commented on all the plans for library science education programs. Among those plans, they felt the best were the Tentative Plan for Library Science Education Improvement(1972)and the Library and Information Science Education Standards(1977).
