本稿の目的は，パーソンズ医療社会学において，1950年代に提出された健康概念が，いかにして晩年近くの1978年になって「刷新」されるに至ったのか，その経緯を再構成することにある．本稿では，健康概念の準拠点および範囲に着目し，その変化（準拠点の移動および範囲の拡張）を，1960年代～70年代のパーソンズの理論的諸動向や時代認識と関連づけて跡づける．1950年代の健康概念は〈役割遂行能力の最適状態〉と定義されているように，社会システム‐パーソナリティ相互浸透領域を準拠点としながら，パーソナリティの健康（「精神的健康」）を主な関心事（範囲）とするものであり，有機体の扱いは副次的であった．晩年の再規定まで，この健康概念そのものは変更されることはなかった．しかし1960年代後半からの「死の意味づけ」論の展開を通じて，健康にまつわる問題の範囲は拡張することになる．つまり，死の意味づけ論が，①時代問題的「意味問題」の文脈を含んでいたことによってL次元方向に，また②生物学志向の文脈を含んでいたことによってA次元方向に，健康問題の範囲は拡張した．晩年における健康概念の再規定は，こうして拡張した健康問題の範囲に，健康概念の範囲を追いつかせるような形でなされたものであり，また，準拠点が有機体に置かれることになったのも，1960年代以来の生物学志向が背景にある，と理解できる．いささか唐突に見える晩年の「刷新」の背景には，1960～70年代のパーソンズの理論的動向や同時代認識があり，「刷新」の方向性もそれらを反映したものとなっている．

The purpose of this paper is to overview the background of “Renewal” of the concept of health in Parsons’ medical sociology, in his later years. In this paper, we focus on the point of reference and the extension of the concept of health. And we will consider its change (the transition of its point of reference and expansion) in association with Parsons’ 1960s to 70s theoretical trends and his perception of the times. In the 1950s, the point of reference of the concept of health was on social system - personality interpenetration sphere. At that time Parsons’ main concern was the mental health, and the organic body was treated secondarily. Until it is redefined in the later years, the concept of health has not been changed. However, since the late 1960s, through a discussion about death, the range of health problems was extended (1) in the direction of the L dimension through the “meaning-problem,” and (2) in the direction of the A dimension through biological orientation. Redefinition of the concept of health in his later years is intended to catch up the scope of the concept of health with the scope of the expanded health problem. And against the background of biological orientation since the 1960s, the point of reference has been shifted to the organism. “Renewal” of Parsons’ concept of health in his later years looks somewhat abrupt. But in the background, there is his 1960s and 1970s theoretical trends and perception of the times. In addition, the direction of the “renewal” reflects it.
