The objective of this study is to investigate usage awareness and knowledge regarding oral rehydration solutions in the community-dwelling elderly population and apply the results to the development of dehydration countermeasures as part of health care management among the elderly. The subjects comprised 35 members of the elderly population who were over the age of 65 and had participated in preventative care classes or dietary classes facilitated by community associations. The research was conducted by asking the subjects to fill out a questionnaire. The contents of the questionnaire included basic attributes, measures taken against dehydration in daily life, and items regarding oral rehydration solutions such as understanding, usage intention, etc. Of the subjects who agreed to participate, 91.4% reported that they took measures of some kind against dehydration/heatstroke. The most common countermeasure, with the highest percentage of 82.9%, was to “drink a beverage”. With regard to the future use of oral rehydration solutions, the responses given by the subjects, in descending order, were: “when feeling tired”, “as a countermeasure against dehydration”, and “when having digestive problems”. We found that the elderly did not proactively use oral rehydration therapy as a countermeasure against dehydration. However, knowledge and experience of oral rehydration therapy as part of everyday health care management would assist members of the elderly in preventing dehydration. In order to protect the elderly from the risks of dehydration, knowledge about oral rehydration therapy as a promotional factor in preparedness against dehydration needs to be provided by professionals, such as resistered dietitians. It is considered that, in turn, would lead to risk mitigation in medical emergency situations.
