The purpose of this study was to ascertain the health and nutritional status of middle and long distance high school runners and to examine nutrition education methods.Blood testing resulted in 4 out of 23 individuals being determined anemic. In the dietary study, calories, carbohydrates, calcium, and vitamin B1 intake were found to be low in both males and females, and iron intake was shown to be low in females. Half of those eating unbalanced meals purchased only single pre-packaged food items from convenience stores. In addition, the nutrients to which subjects paid attention when purchasing items were different from the nutrients in which they were actually deficient.Nutrition education regarding commonly deficient nutrients and food sources of such nutrients was carried out for the survey. An oral instructional method was compared with an instructional method that utilized a sheet with photographs of food items, names of food items, and main nutrients. One of 10 subjects educated with the former and 5 of 10 subjects educated with the latter method changed their eating habits. Hence, we felt that presenting the material in written form, and as food productsrather than as only the names of nutrients, was an effective method of influencing the athletes to change their dietary behavior.
