ジェイムズ・ジョイス『フィネガンズ・ウェイク』 第１部第２章の概要 (30.1～47.29)

ジェイムズ・ジョイス著『フィネガンズ・ウェイク』の第１部第２章30ページ1行目から47ページの29行目までを訳出した。逐語的に訳した箇所もあるが、内容をくみとりながらその主意を表した箇所もあり、「概要」といった題名にした。訳出した本文は、「ハサミムシ」というH.C.Eのあだ名の由来、H.C.Eが少女たちの排尿を盗視したという噂についてのH.C.EのCadへの告白、およびその噂の拡散の様相という、この小説の筋立ての基本となるシーンを取り上げている。

I translated into Japanese James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake I.2 (30.1〜47.29). In some parts I translated it word for word, but in other parts I just gave the gist of the sentences or the paragraphs. So in naming the title I used the word ‘epitome’, not ‘translation.’ This chapter treats the origin of H.C.E’s nickname ‘Earwig’, H.C.E’s confession to Cad about the rumor that he had a stealthy glance at the girls’ urination, and the wide spread of the rumor, which are the fundamental episodes of the story about H.C.E (and A.L.P).
