At 7:00 on the 8th of December 1941, the citizens of Japan had received news from the radio that the Pacific War has started when Japan has entered the combat state against the Allies. In accordance with the emergency, literary magazines has changed some of the original manuscript in urgency and published a special war edition for the January publication in 1942. The February edition has detailed articles of publication writers’ view on the war and attitudes needed to face the incident. This paper will focus on the novels based on the Pacific War on the 8th of December. There were a total of five novels which were called The Novels of the 8th of December, according to an investigation by Odagiri Susumu. The Second Sino-Japanese War erupted on the 7th of July, 1937 has introduced the National Spiritual Mobilization Movement and National Service Draft Ordinance by the Japanese Government to ensure the success of the war. Aside from the requisition of citizen, songs were also included as the prevalence and popularity of war songs were viewed as tools to propagate national policies, which is also an important strategy of inculcating patriotism to citizens. Most of the works in The Novels of the 8th of December described the singing of war songs. Thus, the research will emphasize on the radio announcements and war songs written in the novels.
