Abstract

Accelerometers have been used for several decades to monitor body movement in subjects, and technological advances have provided devices that are suitable to monitor life activities of free-living subjects over prolonged time span. In this study, we compared the possibility of Bio Balance Chip (BBC), a newly developed micro-sized biological data (body movement, posture and skin temperature) monitoring logger, as an automatic sleep-wake identification tool and a life activity monitor, with Actigraph the most widely used device in these field.BBC is at the same level compared to Actigraph in terms of the estimation of the starting and ending time of sleep. Furthermore, since it can detect turnovers and abrupt waking and body movements during sleep, and it helps to understand the subject's daily life activities more specifically, BBC is suggested to be superior to Actigraph.Since BBC's smallness allows measurements non-conscious to subjects, its application to the cure and care of patients such as with dementia etc. is highly expected.
