Abstract

Oxford has an extremely rich and diverse library service provided by over one hundred libraries, including major research libraries, faculty and department libraries, and college libraries. Apart from college libraries, most of the libraries are now managed under the umbrella of the integrated Oxford University Library Services (OULS). One of the new functional services of OULS is the Conservation and Collection Care Department (CCC), which is responsible for implementing a new preservation strategy to ensure that collections are available for readers now and in the future. The CCC emergency planning project started last year as part of the strategy programmes. This article suggests one way we might formulate an emergency plan for a large federated group of libraries and examines some key elements, with specific examples, which should be incorporated into such a plan.
