An experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of methionine supplementation on amino acid concentration of duodenal and ileal digesta and on its absorption from the small intestine in goats fed a urea diet. Concentrations of methionine, lysine, threonine, proline, tyrosine and histidine in the duodenal digesta were significantly increased by methionine supplementation, whereas concentration of valine was significantly decreased. Chemical score of duodenal digest, was increased from 44 to 53 by methionine supplementation. Concentrations of glutamic acid + glutamine, aspartic acid + asparagine, glycine, leucine, valine, serine, lysine, isoleucine, proline, phenylalanine, arginine and histidine in the ileal digest, were significantly increased by methionine supplementation. Amounts of methionine, lysine, proline, tyrosine and arginine absorbed from the small intestine were significantly increased by methionine supplementation. By feeding the urea diets supplemented with and without methionine, 89 and 77% of methionine appeared in the duodenum were absorbed from the small intestine during 8 hours after commencement of feeding, and absorption rates of the other amino acids were less than 70%. Absorption rates of total amino acids were not different in both diets, being 57 and 59%, respectively. It is suggested from these results that methionine supplementation to a urea diet improves nutritive value of microbial protein synthesized in the rumen of goats by changing its amino acid composition. This contributes to the increased nitrogen retention in goats fed a methionine supplemented urea diet.
