Using the Gaschromatographic technique, the component of volatile fatty acid (VFA) in the alimentary canal of White Leghorn laying hens has been studied. 1) The concentration of VFA in the alimentary canal of hens was decreased in the orders of caecum, colon-rectum, crop sac, pars cranialis and pars caudalis of jejuno-ileum and muscular stomach. The average concentration of VFA in the canal was 114.62±3.28mg/g wet.2) Acetic (C2), propionic (C3), iso-butyric (iso-C4), n-butyric (n-C4), iso-valeric (iso-C5) and n-valeric (n-C5) acid were detected in various parts of the canal. The concentration and the amount of acetic acid were highest in all the parts of the canal. The concentration of VFA decreased in the orders of C2, C3, n-C4, n-C5, iso-C5 and iso-C4. 3) It was found that the concentration and the kinds of VFA fraction were different among the parts of the canal. The amounts of iso-C4, n-C4, iso-C5 and n-C5 in the muscular stomach, pars descendens and pars ascendens of duodenum, pars cranialis and pars caudalis of jejuno-ileum were about two to three times higher than that of those in the crop sac, caecum and colon-rectum. 4) The concentration of total VFA was significantly different among the parts of the canal and the amount of C2 was significantly different among the parts of the canal except crop sac, caecum and colon-rectum.
