A recent trend toward increase of incidence of fatty livers in broiler chickens promoted us to investigate histological characteristics of the livers.Livers of 8 male and 8 female broilers on 9 weeks of age were sampled at random at a poultry processor. Nearly sixty percent of the livers appeared to suffer from fatty infiltration in the central and peripheral portions of Lobuli hepatis. With respect to male and female broilers which were raised for 9 weeks on floor pens of a windowless poultry-house, an infiltration of fat droplet in all portions over Lobuli hepatis were observed in 7 out of 8 livers sampled. They are, hence, classified histologically into fatty liver.Feeding NKK-100, a hepatic lipid-reducing chemical, at 1000 ppm in a diet for 6 weeks from 3 weeks of age relieved the histological characteristics of fatty liver, being reflected in the decreased content of chemically determined hepatic lipid.A significant positive correlationship was demonstrated between histologically estimated fat scores and chemically determined lipid contents of the broiler chicks.
