To estimate methane production of 6-week-weaned calves up to 25 weeks of age, regression analyses were carried out using data obtained from 145 energy balance trials on growing calves from 7 to 25 weeks of age. Results were obtained as follows: 1. Methane production increasedwith age, Methane production(Y, g/day) regressed on age(X, weeks) as follows: Y=3.4(±0.13)X-1.2. 2. A significant multiple regression equation was obtained on methane production and such variables as intakes of digestible crude protein, digestible nitrogen free extracts and digestible crude fiber. Of those variables, digestible crude protein showed a negative partial regression coefficient. The regression equation appeared to have less promising accuracy considering the coefficient of determination, which was 0.77. Thus, it was inferred that the components of proximate composition were of limited value for estimating methane production from them. 3. Regression analyses of methane production on detergent fibers resulted in the following multiple regression equations for the estimation of methane production: Methane(g/day)=0.030 DCC+0.035 DCWC-8.1, R=0.894**, Methane(g/day)=0.032 DCC+0.066 DADF-10.8, R=0.897**, where DCC, DCWC and DADF designate digestible cellular contents, digestible cell wall constituents and digestible acid detergent fiber, respectively. Possible causes were discussed for a negative partial regression coefficient of digestible crude protein.
