For the purpose of studies on the serological constitution of sheep, the present experiments were carried out to confirm the new cellular antigenic factors by hetro and iso-immunization of blood cell, and to clarify the frequencies of appearance of new antigenic factors in a few groups of sheep in Japan and U. S. A. The results obtained were as follows:
1) Normal antibodies in sheep blood sera caused by agglutination were not recognized to be present. However, hemolysins seemed to be present in sheep blood sera. Their frequencies of appearance were extremely low and their titers were also very weak.
2) The specific hemolysin anti-sh1 was produced by the antirabbit serum immunized with sheep blood cells. The new cellular antigenic factor Sh1 corresponding to anti-sh1 was confirmed in sheep blood cells. The titer of the anti-Sh1 serum was 128 fold.
3) The specific hemolysin anti-2 was produced by the iso-immunization with sheep blood cells. The cellular antigenic factor 2 corresponding to anti-2 was also confirmed in sheep blood cells. The titer of the anti-2 serum was 16 fold.
4) The frequencies of appearance of sh1 and 2 antigens in 145 Japanese Carriedales were 8.3% and 49.6%, respectively. On the contrary, those in 40 sheep from the Uneversity of Illinois, Urbana, U. S. A. were 57.5% and 67.5%, respectively. The frequency of appearance of S antigen of sheep in U. S. A. was also lower than that of those in Japan.
5) By combining these antigenic factors, the blood of sheep can be classified into 8 types. The frequencies of sppearance of each types in 260 sheep are as shown in Table 10. The frquency of appearance of S type was the highest, 30.3% and that of sh1, S-sh1 and S-sh1-2 types was the lowest, 2.3%, respectively. The frequencies of appearance of S type among 220 sheep in Japan were the highest, 34.1%, and that of sh1-2 .type among sheep in U. S. A. was the highest, 32.5%.
