The experiment was undertaken to determine if dietary tryptophan affects growth, lipid metabolism, plasma corticosterone concentration and the hepatic microsomal mixed function oxidase system in male broiler chicks kept at different stocking densities. Male broilers in the cage (7 days of age) were subjected to 217, 325 or 625cm2 per chick for 14 days. The chicks reared in each stocking density were fed a basal diet (metabolizable energy, 3, 150 kcal/kg diet ; crude protein, 21.5% ; tryptophan content, 0.28 %) or a basal diet supplemented with 0.05% or 0.15% tryptophan. Body weight gain tended to decrease with the decrease in stocking density, while the tryptophan supplementation slightly improved, but not significantly, the reduction in body weight gain. Plasma corticosterone concentration in chicks kept at 625cm2 stocking density decreased with supplemental tryptophan levels, and supplemental tryptophan did not affect it in chicks kept at 217cm2 of the stocking density. A decrease in carcass fat content was observed only in chicks kept at 325cm2 stocking density and fed the 0.05% tryptophan-supplemental diet, or in those kept at 625cm2 stocking density and fed the 0.15% tryptophan supplemental-diet. At 217cm2 stocking density, the higher value plasma corticosterone concentration was observed in chicks fed the control and 0.05% tryptophan-supplemental diets. At 325cm2 stocking density, the higher value was in chicks fed the 0.15% tryptophan-supplemental diet. The plasma corticosterone concentration in chicks kept at 217cm2 stocking density decreased with supplemental tryptophan levels. Addition of tryptophan to the basal diet increased hepatic microsomal protein content and the interaction of dietary tryptophan and stocking density were significant. The effects of supplemental tryptophan and the stocking density on the components of the MFO varied. The content of cytochrome P-450 and activity of NADPH-cytochrome c reductase and NADH-cytochrome b 5 reductase per mg microsomal protein increased via the 0.05% tryptophan-supplemental diet. The content of cytochrome b 5 per 100 g body weight was also affected by dietary tryptophan. These results suggest that supplemental tryptophan affects lipid metabolism, plasma corticosterone concentration and the hepatic microsomal mixed function oxidase system of male broilers kept at stocking density. The occurrence of supplemental tryptophan effects is dependent on the stocking density.
