The morphological and ecological studies on the red jungle fowl were carried out during the first and second investigations of Nepalese native livestock in 1986 and 1988. The red jungle fowls collected in Tarai were 3 males and 3 females, of which 1 male and 2 females were applied to the somatometry and 3 individuals (1 male and 2 females) were stuffed. For the ecological investigation, the hearing survey was performed at 14 places and the ecological observation at some places near the Bara Wildlife Conservation. From the differences in feather colour and pattern between red jungle fowls from Nepal and Thai, the Nepalese jungle fowl was morphologically identified as Gallus gallus murghi. The multivariate comparison using 7 body measurements revealed that the Nepalese jungle fowl followed the Indonesian Gallus gallus in size and shape being larger than the other three populations (Philippine and Thai Gallus gallus gallus, and Javanese Gallus gallus bankiva). Results of ecological investigation suggest that the red jungle fowl may inhabit even the ordinary forest outside of the national park and the wildlife conservation in Tarai as rather big populations, and that its breeding season may be variable according to the geographical and meteorological localities in Nepal. The results also suggest a possibility of crossing between the jungle fowl and the domestic chicken. The clutch size of the Nepalese red jungle fowls was generally the same as the egg number counted in the Southeast Asian red jungle fowl.
