In rescent years, the chance to treat for amoebiasis may increase again in Japan, because many persons visit to endemic area frequently. We experienced five cases of in-testinal amoebiasis. All cases were male and age was from 27 to 57 years old. Patients complained of watery diarrhea, blood, mucus and pus in stools.
In sigmoidoscopic findings of all cases, undermined ulcers, of which the edge raised, were observed within the rectum and the lower part of sigmoid colon and surrounding mucosa was even normal. Trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica were found both in biopsy specimen and fresh exsudate which was obtained at the time of sigmoidoscopy in 4 of 5 cases.
In remaining case, cysts of E. histolytica were found in stools. Serameba test (latex agglutination test) which was performed in 3 of 5 cases showed positive in all cases. Intestinal amoebiasis would be kept in mind on the differential diagnosis of inflammatory bowel diseases. Examination of biopsy specimen and fresh exsudate obtained under sigmoidoscopy and serological test seemed to be effective for final diagnosis.
