抄録

Rectocele is a kind of rectal hernia peculiar to females, in which the rectovaginal septum bulges to the vagina just like a pocket. Patients suffering from rectocele complain of afeeling of residual faeces in spite of along defecation time.
Diagnosis can be easily established by defecography. During straining we can observe the anterior wall of the rectum bulging to the vagina. The degree of bulging does not always agree with the severity of clinical symptoms. Even if the bulging is severe, some patients complain of only a milde feeling of residual faeces.
Treatment should be done, as a rule, by a conservative therapy i.e., giving dietary fibers or laxatives, but if patient's complaint continues, surgical procedures may be recommended.
Operation is conducted to reinforce the rectovaginal septum though the anus or vagina. Postoperative course is generally unventful, and the patient remains symptomless.
