Experience has shown that the complexity of performing a total colonoscopy ranges from simple to the very difficult. Therfore, a consideration on the type of colon which provides a simple or a complicated operation was needed.
A sample of one hundred people, who visited the Yamazaki Geka-Naika between January 1989 and March 1990, with bowel complaints, were examined with the air-contrast barium enema after the one-stage method of J. Kariya.
The form and position of the sigmoid colon, sigmoid descending junction (S. D. J), left colic flexure, transverse colon, right colic flexure and cecum were examined and the points of the colon considered difficult to pass during a colonoscopy were noted and graded. The sigmoid colon was then classified according to shape; five types (I-V) were found after S. Daibo.
The difficulty of a total colonoscopy was then related to the type of sigmoid colon. A sigmoid colon of type V is considered to provide the most complex colonoscopy compared to the others-types I, III (p<0.01) and II (p<0.05).
