抄録

Three cases (two females and one male) of anorectal malignant melanoma operated on in our department for the past 25 years were reported. This made up 0.5% (3/538) of the total cases of anorectal malignancies. All were treated by abdomino-perineal resection followed by adjuvant chemotherapy. One male patient is alive with no sign of recurrence for 18 months after operation, the other two died 6 months and 26 months after operation respectively. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) presenting as a high-intensity lesion on T 1-weighted images and as a low-intensity lesion on T2-weighted images proved to be a safe and useful modality for preoperative diagnosis of melanoma since biopsy is contraindicated. The methods of treatment were also discussed including abdomino-perineal resection versus restorative resection and gene therapy which is under way in the USA.
