The clinicopathologic significance of mucinous carcinoma of the colon and rectum was analyzed in a retrospective study with nonmucinous carcinoma. Mucinous carcinoma of the colon and rectum comprised 21 (4.6%) of 452 cases of colorectal carcinoma. Mucinous carcinoma was more common in male patients. The rectum was the most common site, but 23.8 % of mucinous tumors were located within the right-sided colon. In an examination of the stage at operation, there were significantly fewer stage I tumors within the mucinous group (4.8%) compared with the nonmucinous group (26.0%). Mucinous tumors occurred at an advanced stage. Mucinous carcinoma that was resectable for cure had a poorer survival than nonmucinous carcinoma. When the survival was examined by stage, the mucinous group of stage II & III had a poorer survival than the nonmucinous group of stage II & III. And when examined by location, the survival in patients with mucinous carcinoma of the rectum was poorer than that in patients with nonmucinous carcinoma of the rectum.
