Abstract

We studied a significance of serum ELAM-1 which was one of cell adhesion molecule and was known to bind a carbohydrate antigen sialyl Lewis X, in 30 patients with colon cancer. Serum level of ELAM-1 ranged from 23.8U/ml to 144.7U/ml with a meam of 66.1 ± 29.5 U /ml and normal value of ELAM-1 was calculated by mean + 2 SD of healthy human samples. Mean ELAM- 1 level was 87.0 ± 33.6 U / ml in patients with metastasis (Dukes C and D), which was significantly higer than in those without metastasis (Dukes A and B : 52.2±15.6U/ml). Sensitivity was 92.9 %, specificity was 93.8 % and accuracy was 93.3 % between positivity of serum ELAM-1 and metastasis, which was higher than those of CEA or CA19-9.<BR>Those results suggest that serum ELAM-1 would be a useful tumor marker as an evaluation of metastasis of colon cancer.
