Influenza virus otitis media from the last decade of Oct. '53 to Jan. '54, was studied when the analogous disease of influenza was prevalent at Kanazawa outlying districts.
At that, 876 patients were seen in our clinic and 97 of them were acute otitis in which 17 of so-called influenza virus otitis media were found.
Ten cases from these 17 and another 10 of analogous cases were selected and influenza A-prime virus were forund from 4 which had the same antigenecity.
They were not always the typical hemorrhagic otitis except in the clinical severe cases which presented the hemorrhagic or nonhemorrhagic vesicles in the tympanum and brought violent pain of the ear. Flush of the tympanum or auditorial canal were obvious within the range of deep auricular artery. Hemorrhage in the middle ear were observed before in the tympanum and auditorial canal. These hemorrhages may be caused not only by the hyperemia of capillary vessels but also by the pathogenecity of virus.
The following studies are necessary to prove whether the infection was caused through the blood stream or the eustachian tube.
A local injecton of aureomycin was used and favorable recovery was seen in 1-3 weeks.
