抄録

In an attempt to evaluate the proliferative activity of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells, we immunohistochemically examined the expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) using specimens obtained with ultrasonography-guided fine needle biopsy. The labeling index (LI) of PCNA in HCC was significantly higher (22.3±6.3%, n=33; p<0.001) than in CH (10.2±2.7%, n=22) or LC (10.2±2.5%, n=25). Apparent increase in LI (>15.4%: mean±2SD of the controls) was observed in 88.6% in HCC (31/35 nodules), 4.5% in CH (1/22) and 4.0% in LC (1/25). Of 33 patients with increased LI (>15.4%), 31 (93.3%) had HCC. Nineteen of 20 small HCC (95.0%) with diameter of 20mm and under also showed LI exceeding 15.4%. In HCC patients, LI of cancerous lesion was significantly higher (23.9±4.6%; p<0.01) than that of non-cancerous lesion (10.8±3.9%). We conclude that PCNA is a reliable marker to assess the cell proliferative activity of HCC specimens obtained with fine needle biopsy.
