In order to disclose architectural characteristics of reticulin fibers in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), 45 cases of HCC, 5 cases of liver cirrhosis (LC) and 10 cases of normal liver were submitted for the present study. Histological investigations were thoroughly performed on reticulin stain preparations. "Hook-shaped reticulin fiber", which has not been reported before, was described here firstly, and its morphological findings were reported. Comparing with the normal liver, the number of fibers was slightly decreased in LC, and was remarkably diminished in HCC. On the reticulin architectures, discontinuity, irregular running pattern, variable size, tapering and lump formation of reticulin fibers and occurrence of intratumor-scars were considered to be characteristic changes for HCC. It was also confirmed quantitatively that a density and amount of reticulin fibers was decreased in accordance with histological grade of differentiation of HCC.
