Compressive viscosity of snow with densities less than 180kg/m3 was measured at Tohkamachi, 1988. The relation between compressive viscosity η/ and snow density ρ was found to be expressed by
η= Cρn.
Although the value of C scattered considerably from 0.193 to 0.794 N.s.m-2 (m3/kg) m, the power n showed almost the constant value 4.00. Relations between η and ρ obtained by several previous researchers were also expressed by the form of power equation for snow with densities less than 300kg/m3. Based on the above equation, the variation of snow density with time was derived as follows :
ρ (t, ti) = {(n/C) Q (t, ti) + ρ0n} 1/n,
where ρ (t, ti) is the density at time t of ti-layer (deposited at time ti), ρ0 the initial density of ti-layer, Q (t, ti) the integrated normal stress which acted perpendicularly to ti-layer from ti to t. The equation was used for computing theoretically the depth of snow cover and the depth-density profile from the observed daily amount of precipitated snow. The calculated results were found to be in good agreements with the data observed at Tohkamachi.
