A compact chemical sensor using surface plasmon resonance (SPR sensor) was developed. This sensor measures the concentration of a liquid sample through the measurement of the refractive index of the sample. The phenomenon of excitation of surface plasmon by light was employed to measure the refractive index sensitively and preciselly. In our SPR sensor, surface plasmon on a silver film deposited on a glass prism was excited by a convergent light beam from the prism side and the excitation was observed with a linear photodiode array. Owing to the use of the photodiode array, SPR sensor can be constructed without mechanically moving parts. A compact SPR sensor was made by attaching two micro-cylindrical lenses to the prism. The size of the compact sensor is 50 mm×30 mm×150 mm. Feasibility of the compact SPR sensor was demonstrated by the observation of the excitation of surface plasmon for liquid sample. Measurements for an emulsion sample and for an absorptive sample was performed.
