Fibroblasts (GH1 and GH2) derived from the gingiva of two siblings with gingivalfi bromatosis were characterized. GH1 and GH2 grew slower than cells from gingiva of agematched control. The both diseased cells were capable of synthesizing much greater amounts of extracellular substances, including collagen and glycosaminoglycans, while no significant difference in quantity of synthetic protein was found between diseased and normal cells. Immunostaining study showed that GH1 and GH2 synthesized both Type I and Type III collagens and showed no difference from the normal cells.<BR>These findings suggest that the fibromatosis contains affected fibroblasts which are active in the production of great amounts of extracellular substances, compared with normal fibroblast.
