Gingival examination in three patients treated with nifedipine, a new agent belonging to the calcium antagonist group of drugs in cardiology, were performed.<br>In one patient administered nifedipine 44mg/day for about 6 months, severe gingival hyperplasia was observed. Gingival tissues were firm and fairly hard to touch and lesions appeared to originate from the interdental papillae. Gingival biopsy revealed pronounced fibrosis with fibroblastic proliferation within the lamina propria. Hyperplastic changes in gingiva were similar clinically and histopathologically to the hyperplasia caused by diphenylhydantoin (Dilantin).<br>In other two cases, gingival appearances were clinically normal. However, accumulation of connective tissue substance within the propria and epitherial acanthosis were advanced in the histopathological examination of gingival biopsies.
