Abstract

Nowadays several data archives have been constructed and some of them are handily available for public use not only in the U. S. A. and European countries, but also in Japan. Thus we can make use of those data for the further study of our concerns in the secondary analyses.<BR>The Japanese National Family Research (NFR98) was done in 1998 for the purpose of understanding the actual circumstances of Japanese families in order to construct national data open to public use. So, the NFR98 is now going to be available for our use comparing to other national data. In the comparison, however, the concepts of families/households and the sampling units and observation units which have been used in each survey are required to be examined respectively. In this paper, after having critically surveyed the data archives and the open data concerning the families and households in the Western countries, the theme concepts and units have been examined specifically focusing on the surveys of the families and households in Great Britain.
