Evaluation is made of a fundamental and clinical study the newly developed hollow fiber plasma separator, Plasma Star (PM50). The Plasma Star hollow fiber consists of cellulose triacetate and has wall thickness of 80μm, an internal diameter of 270μm, and a maximum pore size of 0.4μm. Its effective surface area is 0.5m2. In the fundamental study, transmembrane pressures were stable at 8-13mmHg throughout the perfusion, during which the blood and plasma flow was 100ml/min and 35-38ml/min, respectively. Sieving coefficients of T. P., albumin, gamma-globulin and beta-globulin were 0.95 in each case. In the clinical study, eleven patients were treated 32 times for over 2 hours. The sieving coefficients of albumin, IgG, IgA, and IgM were 91%, 91%, 94%, and 98%, respectively. Mean decrease in leukocyte and platelets during plasma exchange were 4% and 10%. Red blood cell counts remained at the same level. There were no differences on the data of blood chemistry between before and after plasma exchange.
