Abstract
We evaluated biological action of extracts from partially acetylated cellulose acetate, which originated from wood pulp. This material caused severe hyperemia in iris and sclera soon after injection in rabbits. In mongrel dogs, cough, sneezing and tachypnea in addition to hyperemia in sclera were followed immediately after injection of the material. In the latter experiments, it was noted severe transient leukopenia and thrombocytopenia within ten minutes after injection. Severe transient hypoxia occured in one experiment, which showed most profound leukopenia and respiratory symptoms. The structure of this biologically active material was identified as partially acetylated glucan and/or xylan by 13CNMR analysis.
