The authors administered Tsumura-Saikokaryukotsu-boreito (7.5g/day) combined with Oxazolam (60mg/day) to 51 male patients with abnormal sensation (feeling of a lump) in the throat and Tsumura-Hangekobokuto (7.5g/day) combined with Oxazolam (60mg/day) to 52 female patients for 2 weeks. Side effects, chiefly drowsiness, were reported by 10 patients (9.7%). In one male and two female patients they were so severe that the medication had to be suspended. The therapeutic effects of the medication were evaluated in 50 male and 50 female patients at the end of the first and second week of administration and one week after the termination of treatment. It was considered to be effective when the abnormal sensation improved subjectively by 50% or more. Among the 50 male patients, the medication was effective in 70% within one week, in 74% in two weeks and in 70% in three weeks (one week after the termination of treatment). Among the 50 female patients, the medication was effective in 78% in one week, in 80% in two weeks and in 58% in three weeks. Thus, this combination of Kanpo and modern medication was very effective in the therapy of abnormal sensation in the throat.
