Since the installation of MeSH “Retraction of Publication” in 1984, there has been an increase in the retraction of papers due to error or revealed misconduct in the latter half of the 1970s. From 1984 to 1989, of 73 papers indexed in MEDLINE in this MeSH; 33 papers were retracted because of misconduct, 32 papers were retracted because of errors and 5 papers were retracted for other reasons. Forty-two percent of the papers were retracted within two years, but some papers took over 6 years to be retracted. After retraction, some new articles were found to have cited the retracted papers, so the system of “Retraction of papers” does not work completely. Editors of some medical journals have discussed this problem and presented guidelines which recommend positive publication of reports of retraction. Establishment of a system of retraction is scientific communication in an important matter for consideration.
