Abstract
We evaluated the effects of subarachnoid phenol block in 23 cases complaining of pain of the thoracic and perineal regions diffi cult to control with drug therapy. Visual analogue scale( VAS) scores and changes in opioid dose level over time( immediately before and 2 weeks, 4 weeks, and 3 months after start of the block) were evaluated as indicators of effi cacy. VAS scores decreased signifi cantly after start of the block from the preblock scores, with the maximum reduction recorded 2 weeks after, but they increased over time with disease progression. There was no signifi cant difference between preblock and postblock opioid dose levels. Analgesic effi cacy did not differ depending on the site of block( thoracic and perineal regions). Subarachnoid phenol block is expected to exert long-lasting effi cacy following a single session of a single treatment.
