Compared with carcinomas of the digestive organs, malignant lymphomas of the digestive organs are rare, especially those of the large intestine, accounting for 0.2-0.65% of all carcinomas. Four patients with malignant lymphoma arising in the large intestine experienced at the hospital in a recent 5-year period from 1998 to 2002 are presented here.<br>Their ages ranged from 57 to 91 years, with a mean of 73.0. The male-to-female ratio was 3 to one. Those lesions were located in the rectum in two patients, the cecum in one and the sigmoid colon in one. All four patients were correctly diagnosed before surgery by biopsy or polypectomy. All patients underwent an operation, including a right hemicolectomy, a laparoscopy-aided anterior resection, a low anterior resection of the rectum, or construction of artificial anus, respectively. In the former three patients their surgeries (D3) resulted in curability A. Histopathologically all four patients had non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, B-cell type. According to LSG classification, all cases were of diffuse type, including two of large cell type, one of medium-sized cell type, and one of small cleaved cell type. As postoperative adjuvant therapy, chemotherapy was given to two patients. As for prognosis, two patients are alive carrying recurrence, one patient has been free from recurrence, and the remaining patient died.
