Changes of the blood flow on rabbit VX 2 carcinoma with time after heating were studied using microangiography. The tumors inoculated in the foot pads were used in these studies. Hyperthermia was administrated by microwave heating (2450 MHz) at 41 °C, 43 °C and 45 °C each for a 30-minute period. Microangiography of the tumor vasculature was carried out from the femoral artery immediately, 3 hours and 24 hours after heating.<BR>The blood flow of tumor vessels in the groups heated at 43 °C and 45 °C did not recover completely compared with the control groups, whereas the blood flow of the tumor vessels tended to recover with time in all groups. These facts indicated that the disturbance of tumor blood flow prolonged with increase heating temperatures. Disturbances of blood flow were marked in small vessels and slight in large vessels. Therefore, it seemed that the distrubances of tumor blood flow by hyperthermia was related to the architecture of tumor vasculature. The recovery of tumor blood flow started from the anastomosis between Arteria plantaris medialis and Arteria tibialis anterior superficialis 3 hours after heating in the groups heated at 41 °C and 43 °C. These facts indicated that the recovery of tumor blood flow did not necessarily started from the artery which supplied the tumor, but was related closely to the collateral circulation from the nonheating area. Probably, the primary disturbances of blood flow on VX 2 carcinoma by hyperthermia were caused not by irreversible damages to tumor vessels, but by reversible damages chiefly because the disturbance of tumor blood flow recovered with time in all groups.
