To obtain basic information for dietary instructions, we examined the relation of the number of consumed food items with the nutrient intake and obesity among 769 persons who participated in Wakayama Prefectural Nutrition Survey, and obtained the following results.
1) Among 769 persons, 312 (41%) consumed 18 to 23 items per day, the average number being 20.2.
2) Nutrient intake expressed as a percentage of the Japanese Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) increased with an increase in the number of consumed food items. The intakes of only two nutrients, calcium and iron, were less than the RDA values in the group consuming 18 to 23 items, and the intake of all nutrients exceeded the RDA values in the group consuming 24 to 29 items. In the group which consumed more than 30 food items, the percentages for protein and fat reached 142% and 125% respectively while that of energy derived from fat was higher than 25%.
3) Intakes of potatoes, confections, fats and oils, pulses, fruits, vegetables, seaweeds, fishes and shellfishes, meats, eggs, milk and dairy products increased with an increase in the number of consumed food items.
4) The proportions of protein, fat, vitamin B1 and vitamin B2 from animal sources including meats, eggs, milk and dairy products increased with an increase in the number of consumed food items.
5) Prevalence of obesity in the group who consumed 24 to 29 items was the lowest compared to the other groups.
These results suggest that the daily intake of 25 items is most adequate for optimal intakes of all the nutrients, although caution should be exercised regarding sufficient calcium intake.
