This experiment dealt with a kinetic analysis on the metabolism of labile protein with respect to the pool size of protein metabolism in adult rats. Two kinds of 20% and 5% protein diets were prepared with each of the purified whole egg protein and the 15N-Chlorella protein supplemented with L-methionine which served as a tracer at the termination of experiments. The 20% protein diet (20% group), the 5% protein diet following the 20% protein diet (5% group) and the 20% protein diet following the 5% protein diet (R 20% group, i. e. under repletion) were given to the animals. The results obtained from the 15N measurement were as follows:
1) The size of nitrogen metabolic pool (mgN) was 286 in the 20% group, 249 in the 5% group and 304 in the R 20% group. These values reflected the amounts of labile protein in the three groups.
2) The size of more active protein pool (mgN) was 208 in the 20% group, 119 in the 5% group and 222 in the R 20% group, where the decrease in the 5% group was remarkable, also corresponding to the decrease in labile protein of this group.
3) The size of less active protein pool (mgN) was 9, 506 in the 20% group, 9, 579 in the 5% group and 9, 669 in the R 20% group. Thus, a difference was not observed between the groups.
4) From these results, it was clarified that the larger part of more active protein pool and some part of nitrogen metabolic pool constitute labile protein in the body.
5) 15N was highly recovered in pancreas and small intestine in the 20% and R 20% groups, whereas in hair and skin in the 5% group, showing a metabolic flow of labile protein in the body.
