After maternal parathyroidectomy (PTX), the concentrations of total and ionic calcium, inorganic phosphorus, magnesium, and protein in maternal and fetal blood and also in amniotic fluid were examined in pregnant rats. Total and ionic calcium concentrations in maternal blood were lower than those of sham operated controls and were getting much lower as gestation advanced. Inorganic phosphorus concentrations were higher than those of sham operated group oppositely to the change of calcium levels, and magnesium concentrations were lower only on days 17 and 18 of gestation. Plasma total protein and albumin concentrations showed somewhat lower levels than those of sham operated group. In fetuses, total calcium concentrations of PTX group became lower than those of sham operated group on days 20 and 21 of fetal age, while ionic calcium concentrations did not show any significant difference with PTX group and sham operated group throughout the examination. However, individual values showed that fetal ionic calcium levels tended to have rather low in the case of extremely low levels of ionic calcium in maternal blood. Maternal PTX induced little changes in the inorganic phosphorus, magnesium, or protein concentrations in fetal blood. The changes of concentrations in amniotic fluid after maternal PTX closely resembled those in fetal blood.
