The mechanism of phase transformation in aluminium-rich zinc alloys during high-temperature ageing were studied by means of hardness and electrical resistivity measurements, electron microscopic observation and X-ray Debye-Scherrer photographs. The initial decomposition in the range of the closed miscibility gap and the phases transformation from a supersaturated solid solution to metastable α′ and stable β phases were studied.<BR>The results are as follows: The initial process of decomposition in aluminium-45at% zinc alloy at high temperature (around 290°C) may be due to spinodal decomposition. The very fine grid-like modulated structure by decomposition remarkably attributes to hardening. Following an incubation period after the spinodal decomposition, the α1–α2 decomposition is observed. On the initial decomposition of aluminium-20at% zinc alloy, it is found that a fine plate-like or spherical structure of the metastable α′ phase contributes to hardening and the growth of the stable β phase takes place simultaneously with this phase.
