The phase transitions in a thermally cycled Fe-16.50wt%Mn-0.26wt%C alloy (−196°C\ ightleftarrows400°C) were investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy. As increasing the number of thermal cycles (up to 400 cycles), the following phase transitions were observed: γ(3R) + ε(2H) → faulted γ → 15R(3\bar2)3 → 18R(5\bar1)3→ reversed γ. The γ+ε→ faulted γ and 18R → reversed γ tansitions brought about remarkable changes in their morphologies. These phase transition processes were attributed to the existence of carbon atoms.
