Some recent results on the stress relaxation of metals at low temperatures, interpreted in terms of a stress-partitioned power law, are analyzed. The scaling conditions for this type of stress dependence of the plastic strain rate are given.<BR>Finally, the general conditions for the existence of a plastic equation of state in terms of stress and strain rate are discussed.
