High Resolution Lattice Images of G.P. Zones in an Al-3.97 wt%Cu Alloy

抄録

Atomic structures of G.P. (I) and (II) zones in an Al-3.97wt% alloy are studied by comparing the atom resolution electron microscope images and the theoretically calculated images. The atom resolution images are photographed by the optimum focus conditions which give the abberration fee images in the axial and tilted illuminations.<BR>Among the sharp atom images of the matrix lattice the anomalous contrast due to plate-like G.P. zones lying on {100} are observed along the 200 and 020 lattice planes. The images of G.P. (I) zones appear as dark contrasts or as bright dotted images with various brightnesses depending on the defocus, the foil thickness and the depth of G.P. zones in the crystal. The cluster of Cu atoms with plate-like structure lying on {111} is also found in the early period of ageing. The images of G.P. (II) zones are also observed which consist of two layers of Cu atoms separated by two or three layers of Al atoms. An anomalous image contrast was newly observed for a G.P. (II) zone, suggesting shear displacement of the neighboring atoms parallel to the zone plane.
