We attempted to determine the incidence of Saint's triad, which is generally believed to be a rare disease. The subjects were 354 patients with cholelithiasis and 164 patients with diverticulosis of the colon who had been examined for the presence or absence of diverticulosis of the colon, esophageal hiatal hernia and cholelithiasis during the last 10 years. Of these patients, 10 had Saint's triad. The incidence was 2.82% for patients with cholelithiasis and 6.1% for those with diverticulosis of the colon. Most of the 10 patients were elederly females, all of whom had visited our hospital for cholelithiasis. Eight of them underwent surgery for cholelithiasis. Although one of the eight patients underwent surgery for esophageal hiatal hernia with the surgery for cholelithiasis, no patient underwent surgery for diverticulosis of the colon. Saint's triad is not considered a rare syndrome in Japan, like in other countries. The pathogeneis of the syndrome remains unknown, but it seems clinically important to recognize that the rate of occurrence of this triad is high.
