This paper presents a case of gastric cancer with an extremely rare growth pattern, together with a review of the literature.<br> A 56-year-old woman underwent a laparotomy with a suspicion of gastric submucosal tumor of extramural growth type which was about 5cm in diameter and situated in the lesser curvature of the gastric body. Intraoperative frozen section diagnosis was moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma. A distal gastrectomy with D2 lymph node dissection was performed. Histological study of the resected material revealed a solid growth and extension from the submucosal layer to muscular coat and serous layer, but there was no communication with mucosal layer. A suspicion of metastatic gastric cancer was also raised, but it was obscure.
