抄録

Brucella abortus antigen (BA) was given to neonatal chicks within 24 hours after hatching either through cloacal (pa) or intramuscular (im) route.
All chicks received the antigen by im injection showed serum agglutinin responses at 21 days after the immunization. By pa stimulation, however, only half of the chicks were positive even at 21 days after BA stimulation and the mean agglutinin titers were statistically lower than those of im group.
Neonatal chicks were primed by a single pa or im inoculation of BA antigen and then challenged with im injection at 3, 5, 7, 14 and 21 days after the first immunization. Chicks without priming were served as controls.
In pa treatment, secondary responses were observed in chicks challenged 5 days to 21 days after the first stimulation. On the other hand, secondary responses in im primed chicks were lower than those of pa groups and there were no differences between im group and the non-primed control.
Agglutinin titers of 2-ME resistant antibodies were examined in the serum of chicks challenged at 14 and 21 days after the priming. The titers were higher in pa primed group than those in im primed and non-primed chicks.
These results indicate that bursa oh Fabricius functions as a peripheral lymphoid organ and the antigen per anum route can cause effective development of immunological memory with practically little antibody production. Superiority of pa route to im as a vaccination method for day-old chicks was ascertained by the secondary immune responses.
