抄録

In order to study the treatment for the basic type of intermittent exotropia using botulinum injections, we analyzed a case having a positive result after the occurrence of temporary secondary esotropia and case having a negative result without temporary secondary esotropia, whick showed repeated recurrence of exodeviation.<br>In the positive cases, ocular deviation was 30ΔX(T)′, 25ΔXT. After two botulinum injections in the right lateral rectus muscle (LR), exodeviation decreased but still remained. In the third course of treatment, botulinum was injected into both LR, and deviation was 70ΔET′, 68ΔET. After five months it improved to 4ΔE′, 4ΔE and the patient remained in good condition for two years. In the negative case, deviation was 30ΔX(T)′, 35ΔXT. Although four repetitive botulinum injections were given in the right LR, exodeviation recurred.<br>The results indicated, that botulinum injection into both LR increased the tonus of both medial rectus muscles temporarily and led to an improvement of deviation by convergence eye movement.
